Image awarded 2nd place by Christine Matthews from London, England entitled Emperor Penguin Colony, Snow Hill Island.

Christine tells us ''Thank you so much for letting me know that my image of the Emperor Penguin Colony on Snow Hill Island was placed 2nd in the Living Planet Competition.

The image was taken in October 2018 when I went on an expedition ship to Snow Hill Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. We travelled to Snow Hill Island on the Kapitan Khlebnikov icebreaker from Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. There was a lot of sea ice when we visited and it took a while to find a suitable place to "moor" the ship on the ice. Once on the ice the expedition team did a reconnoitre to set up a safe pathway for us to follow as we walked over the pack ice to the colony following a trip from the ship to the "base camp" by helicopter. On arrival we then had to walk about 2 miles through knee deep snow to reach the colony. We could hear the colony before we got there - the chicks were chirping and the adults trumpeting. We were not allowed to approach the penguins closely, but fortunately no-one had told them and they were soon coming over to investigate who/what we were. It was a rare privilege to go on this trip, as it had been seven years since a similar trip had been organised. The image in this competition was taken on the second day that we went to the colony.

Equipment - Canon EOS 7D MK II, Canon 100-400mm 4.5/5.6 S USM,Details ISO 100, F5.0, 1/1000 - hand held.''
